The town of Sauze d’Oulx is located in the upper Susa Valley, about 1500 m asl in the province of Turin, Piedmont, on the western slopes of Mount Genevris (2536 m).
The Valley, arranged longitudinally and crossed by the river Dora Riparia whose springs are located in France at the Col du Montgenèvre, is surrounded both by the Cozie and the Graie Alpes respectively at the right and left of the watercourse.
The Val di Susa, compared to other valleys on the borderline between Italy and France, has the easiest pass, located at lower altitudes, and for this reason since ancient times has allowed trade between nations.
The name “Sauze” comes from “Sauza” pre-Indo-European ancient word that means a rocky place, however, during the Fascist era, it was renamed Slice d’Ulzio, an unhappy attempted to translate “sauze” in “salice” (willow) although willow trees in this area do not exist.
The town of Sauze has about 1000 inhabitants and is a major tourist centers of the region that can accommodate during the winter over 35 thousand visitors from all over Europe.
Winter tourism, linked to the ski resorts is very present in the Upper Valley, just think that skiing began its spread in Italy right here in the early twentieth century with the first lifts.
At the same time during the summer, Sauze d’Oulx is presented to bike riders with a wide range of courses to suit all kinds of excursions and levels in the uncontaminated nature of these places and are often characterized by structures in wood that perfectly suite with the beautiful woods of larch trees that dominate above a certain altitude.
The natural beauty of the area can also enjoy hiking through the dense network of routes which Sauze and neighboring towns are so rich in.
Also very varied is the gastronomic culture of the area, ranging from milk and dairy production of good cheeses, meats, sweets and liquor. Do not miss the culture of vineyards and orchards with apples, cherries and peaches and different varieties of honey influenced by the climate and the variety of flora.
